Indian Rivers



Peninsular River System:-



The Peninsular Rivers of India are older than the Himalayan Rivers.

The main directions of the flow of rivers in peninsular India are as follows:-Towards the Bay of Bengal or East flowing rivers- Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery etc.

Towards the Arabian Sea or West flowing rivers:-

Narmada, Tapti, Sabarmati, Mahi and several small rivers originating and flowing from the Western Ghats.



River flowing to the West:-



Narmada-

It is the largest river flowing in west direction. It originates from the Western Part of the Amarkantak Plateau and flows in the South Ridge valley between Satpura and Vindhya Ranges in the North.

The Narmada forms a gorge and Dhunadhar waterfall near Jabalpur.

Sardar Sarovar Project has been built in the Narmada. It meets the Arabian Sea south of Bharuch forming a 27 km long estuary.



Tapi or Tapti-

It originates from Multai in Betul of Madhya Pradesh and drains MP, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

The second largest west flowing rivers of the peninsula. Also called the twin or handmaid of Narmada.

It makes estuary.

Mouth- Gulf of Khambhat (Gulf of Cambay) is a bay on the Arabian Sea.



Luni-

It is ephemeral and largest river in Rajasthan in the west of Aravali.

Luni originates near Pushkar in two branches of Saraswati and Sagarmati.

Join each other at Govindgarh and from here it is called Luni and drains into Rann of Kutch.

Luni is a transient river.



Sabarmati-

The Sabarmati River is one of the major west-flowing rivers in India.

It originates in the Aravalli Range of the Udaipur District of Rajasthan.

After the 371 km journey in south-west direction in Rajasthan and Gujarat, the Arabian Sea meets the Gulf of Khambhat.

The ancient name of Sabarmati River is Bhogwa. Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the commercial and political capitals of Gujarat respectively, were established on the banks of Sabarmati River.



Mahi-

It rises in the Vindhyan range of Madhya Pradesh.

It flows into the Gulf of Khambhat.(Arabian Sea).

Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam or Banswara Dam located on this river.



The West Flowing Rivers of the Western Ghats:-

Mandovi, Zuari, and Rachel in Goa.



Kalinadi, Sharavati, and Netravati in Karnataka.



Periyar, Bharatpuzha in Kerala.



Rivers flowing to the East:-



Mahanadi-

It originates from Chhattisgarh's Raipur, Sihawa and meets in the Bay of Bengal via the middle of Orissa.

Hirakud dam is the longest dam in India on this River.



Godavari or Dakshin Ganga-

The Godavari is the second longest River in India.

The Godavari is the largest peninsular river system.

The Godavari is often referred to as the Vriddh (Old) Ganga or the Dakshin (South) Ganga.

The river is about 1,450 km (900 miles) long.

It rises at Trimbakeshwar near Nasik, Mumbai in Maharashtra.

Its tributaries-



Left tributaries-

Banganga, Kadva, Shivana, Purna, Kadam, Pranahita, and Indravati



Right tributaries-



Nasardi, Darna, Pravara, Sindphana, Manjira, and Kinnerasani
